Symbolism

Arms

The black and white colours are those of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, of which Dr. Terwiel has served as National Commissioner. This symbolism is reinforced by the Maltese Cross. The rod of Aesculapius indicates his medical profession, while the gavel attached at the top alludes to his past service as President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The amphora is taken from the arms of Vlissingen in the Netherlands, the city of his ancestors.

Crest

The lion holding a sword is based on the main symbol found in the arms of the Netherlands, with the coronet of Maltese crosses as a further reference to his work with the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.

Motto

This expresses a family and personal approach to life.
