Symbolism

Arms

Blue and yellow (heraldic gold) are the colours of the office of the Governor General of Canada. Blue is also the emblematic colour of the Canada Council for the Arts. These two institutions are the source of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts. The lions’ heads evoke the vice-regal emblem used by the Governor General and their maple leaf crowns represent Canada. Their number represents the two disciplines recognized by the Awards, namely visual and media arts. The maple tree is a symbol that has been used by the Canada Council for the Arts for many years.

Motto

The motto inscribed on the annulus means “Recognizing excellence in the Arts”.
