The star of life is often used by emergency medical services. Here it is made particular to the Alberta Emergency Health Services by using a red cross as part of the badge, alluding to the emergency medical care being provided and the integration of emergency medical services within health care. The maple leaves and wild rose refer to Canada and to Alberta.
