Symbolism

Arms

The falcon relates to a personality trait of one who does not rest until the objective is achieved. The wavy bars represent the Atlantic Ocean, which was crossed when the family came to Canada from Yorkshire, England, and the Pacific Ocean, on whose shores in British Columbia the family now lives. The white rose and white dogwood flower symbolize the two respective domiciles.

Crest

The beaver represents service to Canada. It is also the symbol of the London School of Economics and Political Science where Mr. Fryer was associate editor of the student newspaper, The Beaver. The School’s motto, Rerum cognoscere causas (meaning “To know the causes of things”), is important to Mr. Fryer. The scroll and quill allude to Mr. Fryer’s service to the community through negotiations whose results are written agreements.
