Symbolism

Arms

Blue represents the sea, lakes, and rivers from which the Inuit derive their sustenance. The qulliq, a traditional tool, represents survival. The antlers allude to the caribou, one of the staple food sources of the Inuit.

Crest

The Arctic loon is the Commissioner’s favourite bird.

The hood upon which the crest rests has a wolf fur ruff signifying Inuit reliance on fur-bearing animals for clothing.

Supporters

The ringed seal and the Arctic char are two other staple food sources. The ulu is another traditional tool of survival. The Arctic cotton was used as a wick in traditional seal oil lamps and the Arctic white heather is a fuel for fire.
