Symbolism
Arms
The schooner symbolizes transportation, trade and travel. It is also a symbol of safety in the face of bad weather at sea. The star symbolizes light and recalls the radiating star of faith that adorns the emblem of the Congregation of Brothers of the Christian Schools, which founded the faculty’s predecessor, the École Supérieure de Commerce. The caduceus is a symbol of commerce. Its rod represents power; its snakes, prudence and cunning; its wings, diligence. The caduceus also represents the enigmatic complexity of humanity and the infinite possibilities of human development. The torch suggests the light of reason, genius and science. The flame is a symbol of purification, illumination, spirit and transcendence.
Crest
The helmet is a symbol of invulnerability and power. With the wings, it alludes to the Greek god Hermes, protector of merchants and the emblem of the Faculty.
Motto
Meaning “To excel through knowledge and character,” the motto emphasizes creative intelligence and determined fortitude, two important qualities in the modern business person.
