Symbolism

Arms

The red cross is the symbol of St. George, the parish’s patron. Combined with the blue background, it also alludes to the Royal Union Flag and thus the origins of the parish as a congregation of United Empire Loyalist settlers in 1792. The green refers to the coat of arms of the Diocese of Niagara and the arms and flag of the city of St. Catharines. The Catherine wheel is the instrument of martyrdom of St. Catherine, and thus alludes to the name of the city.

Motto

This is the Latin form of the proclamation “The Light of Christ”, which takes place as the Pascal Candle is brought into the church during the Service of Light at the beginning of the Great Vigil of Easter.

Flag

The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.

Badge

This combines elements of the Arms to indicate St. George and St. Catherine. Its form is based on the badge of the Anglican Church of Canada.
