The seahorse represents confidence and power while the sea-stag represents love and gentility. The seahorse holds a staff of mulberry symbolizing duality and balance, while the sea-stag holds a staff of hawthorn for wisdom and expediency. The two staves of wood also provide a canting reference to Mr. Woods’ surname.

Crest

The ruler is a tool of carpentry and alludes to the idea of measuring out matters in contemplation. The owl is a symbol of knowledge and its stance shows that it is protective of knowledge.

Motto

The motto alludes to the idea that contemplation brings forth wisdom.
