The sword evokes Mr. Casavant’s time serving Canada in the military, and the broken rod symbolizes the fight against terrorism during that service. As well, the sword and rod allude to his mother’s surname of Taillefer, meaning “cutting iron”.

The goblet alludes to the glassware that was used in Mr. Casavant’s family home, and the blue and red colours allude to the family’s origins in Gascony, whose flag is quartered with blue and red.
