Symbolism

Arms

The suns represent the bright skies and sunshine of Alberta.

Crest

The maple leaves indicate Dr. Salopek’s life in and service to Canada. The horse represents his involvement in equestrian activities. Its wings allude to the Canada goose, one of Dr. Salopek’s earliest Canadian memories. The book is a reference to Dr. Salopek’s varied academic career, especially his studies at Cambridge University, and the white disc represents the unity of learning, athleticism and personal achievement. The red and white of the mantling are the colours of Croatia and Canada, Dr. Salopek’s birthplace and his adoptive land.

This sentence is an expression of Dr. Salopek’s view of the world.
