Symbolism
Arms
The divided field symbolizes balance and justice, and alludes to Mr. Noonan’s career as a barrister and solicitor, and to his work in the field of administrative justice. The green represents his Irish heritage and the great boreal forests of Canada. The trefoils and fleurs-de-lis honour his Irish and French-Canadian heritage. The sun represents energy, a field in which Mr. Noonan spent much of his professional life. It also alludes to the idea of high noon, and is thus a pun on Mr. Noonan’s name.
Crest
To Mr. Noonan, the Canada lynx, a denizen of Canada’s boreal forests, embodies discretion and sure-footedness, virtues of the legal profession. The maple leaf represents Mr. Noonan’s long career serving Canada as a public servant with the federal government and as an Ontario public office holder. The crow alludes to his position as western legal counsel to the Canadian Transport Commission and his work related to the implementation of changes to the Crow’s Nest Freight Rate, and to prairie branch line rationalization.
