The squadron was established to replace 21 Radar Squadron, which was originally situated in St. Margarets, New Brunswick. The thistle, the floral emblem of Scotland, represents St. Margaret, who was queen of Scotland. The prickles of the thistle symbolize the defensive role of the squadron.
