Symbolism

Arms

Red, white and blue are the colours of the flag of Croatia, Mr. Strizic’s birthplace, while the red and white chequers are a feature of the coat of arms of Croatia. The keys symbolize financial management, Mr. Strizic’s profession, and the mortars and pestles refer to Mr. Strizic’s great-grandfather, Julije Domac (1853-1928), a leading figure in pharmacology in Croatia. It also alludes to Mr. Strizic’s parents, who were both chemical engineers, and also specifically to his mother, who also used a mortar and pestle as a cook and baker.

Crest

The Bouvier des Flandres breed is a family favourite. The oak branch refers to Slavonian oak, the national tree of Croatia. As it is used to make wine barrels, it also refers to Mr. Strizic’s interest in wine. The maple leaves and thistle heads refer to the family’s Canadian identity and the Scottish heritage of Mr. Strizic’s wife, Patricia.
