Symbolism
Arms
The colours green and blue represent the ideas of hope and loyalty respectively. The wavy bar represents the two rivers that are important to Mr. Ghosh: the Ganges in India and the St. Lawrence in Canada. The Bengal tiger evokes Mr. Ghosh’s Bengali heritage. The dolphin is a link between the two countries because dolphins, of different species, inhabit the two rivers.
Crest
The Asian elephant, with its trunk in the position of a salute, alludes to Mr. Ghosh’s heritage and his leadership in Canada as President and Chief Executive Officer of Husky Energy Inc.
Motto
This phrase, from the 1959 French translation by Yves Bonnefoy of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (Act 2, Scene 2, line 242), is a plea for open-mindedness and moderation. It reflects Mr. Ghosh’s opposition to moral absolutism: there is nothing good or bad, but “thinking makes it so”.
