Symbolism

Arms

The colours of the background refer to Mr. Lanoway’s family roots: blue and red, taken from the arms of the Kingdom of Galicia, for his paternal ancestors’ origins in the Austrian Empire; and blue and yellow, the national colours of Ukraine, for his maternal lineage. The mandrake, a plant used in the Middle Ages for its anesthetic properties, pays homage to Mr. Lanoway’s work as a paramedic. The forked root vegetable resembling a human figure was believed to have magical properties and to emit a piercing scream when anyone tried to pull it from the ground. In his role as an aeromedical evacuation technician in war zones, Mr. Lanoway has had to pull gravely injured soldiers from the field in difficult situations.

Crest

The jackdaw, a main element of the arms of Galicia in eastern Europe, recalls the origins of Mr. Lanoway’s paternal ancestors. It is a skilled flyer that can manoeuvre tightly, in a similar fashion to Mr. Lanoway in his capacity as a paramedic and medical technician in Alberta as well as an air medical evacuation specialist during his deployments to Bosnia and Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces. The star represents his distinguished service as a primary reservist as well as the many medals and decorations he has received. It further recalls his father’s and grandfather’s military service.

Motto

This Latin proverb means “Fortune favours the bold”.
