Symbolism
Arms
The colour and motif of the background are a heraldic fur and for Mr. Hanebaum, symbolize furred quarry. The prairie falcon, which hits its prey harder than other falcons, is a metaphor for rising to a challenge and dealing with it decisively. The prairie roses refer to his wife as well as their daughters, who are the first Canadian-born members of his family. With the falcon, they symbolize a deep connection to the Prairies.
Crest
The falcon-bear, named KaSie – a contraction of the first syllable of Mr. Hanebaum twin daughters Katja and Simone – is a fabulous creature invented for bedtime stories. The lure is used in falconry to train falcons. Its use by the KaSie beast serves to call absent family members back to the Canadian Prairies.
Motto
For Mr. Hanebaum, resilience refers to the ability to overcome life’s setbacks and meet new challenges.

For use by Katja Hanebaum: The unicorn is a virtuous creature and thus refers to her name, derived from the Greek Katharos, meaning “pure”. The ermine spot symbolizes that she is the second born daughter. It recalls the branding marks used by ranchers in Alberta.
