Symbolism
Arms
Red, white and blue are the colours of the flags of Norway, the home of Dean Lee’s ancestors, and of the United States of America, where he was born. The cross-crosslets, taken from the arms of the General Theological Seminary in New York City where Dean Lee studied, represents his vocation as a priest. The lectern alludes to the proclamation of the scriptures; as it was also used by choirs to hold music books, refers to Dean Lee’s love of church music. The mediaeval form of the lectern speaks to his interest in the history of church furnishings and decorative art.
Motto
This phrase is from Psalm 45:1, “My heart is inditing a good matter” (A.V.), “inditing” meaning composing. The phrase is also the opening of one of George Frideric Handel’s Coronation Anthems, and thus alludes to Dean Lee’s love of English church music.
Badge
The cross-crosslet is taken from the arms, and the quatrefoil is found in Gothic architecture, such as that at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, Calgary, of which Dean Lee is Rector.
Flag
The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.
