Symbolism

Arms

The Arctic fox’s face is taken from the arms of the Northwest Territories, and marks the fact that Mr. Pilot served in the Federal and Northwest Territories government from 1966 to 1989, including the position of Deputy Minister, Deputy Commissioner and Principal Secretary to the Cabinet of the Northwest Territories from 1979 to 1989. The bison’s head, from the badge of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, marks Mr. Pilot’s career as an RCMP officer from 1952 to 1965. The maple leaf indicates his service to Canada.

Crest

The red coronet made of Maltese crosses marks Mr. Pilot’s work with the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. The caribou head refers to the crest of the province of Newfoundland, the birthplace of his father.

Motto

This Latin phrase meaning “Service above self” is a summary of his lifetime public service.
