The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The crozier of St. Fillan represents the role of Mr. Dewar’s family as the hereditary guardians of the relics of St. Fillan, the abbot of a monastery in Fife, Scotland, which include the saint’s crozier (pastoral staff). The two croziers behind the shield are the insignia of the office of the Hereditary Keeper of the Crozier of St. Fillan.
Crest
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The paschal lamb holding a banner of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, is likely taken from the arms of the city of Perth, in Scotland, where the Dewar family originates. The lamb is a symbol of St. John the Baptist, the patron of the city.
Motto
This Scots phrase means “Only God and the King”.
