Symbolism

Arms

The diagonal figure represents a ship’s mast and sails, and alludes to Mr. Gilligan-Hackett’s descent from Sir Hugh Allan, of the Allan Line shipping firm. The horses’ heads represent the equestrian interests of Mr. Gilligan-Hackett and his life partner Kim Hart.

Crest

The griffin, expressing vigilance, and the chevron shapes, representing a barrister’s tabs and the “bar” in a courtroom, allude to the occupation of lawyer held by Mr. Gillian-Hackett, his life-partner Kim Hart, and several Hackett relatives. The sword symbolizes the membership of family members in The Black Watch Regiment.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “In my heart, hope,” encapsulates the importance that Kim Hart has played in Mr. Gilligan-Hackett’s life.

Flag

The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record

Badge

The red hackle honours ancestors of Mr. Gilligan-Hackett’s mother who served in The Black Watch and to his Associate Membership in the regiment’s officers’ mess. The scrolls symbolize his occupation as a lawyer, and the lawyers in his father’s ancestral family.
