Symbolism

Arms

The gold colour honours Mr. Bertrand’s ancestors, who were gold prospectors in the Yukon (on his paternal side) and in the Abitibi region of Quebec (on his maternal side), the latter being his place of birth. The castle indicates his profession as an engineer and his experience in building and managing solid and sustainable projects. The blazon for the castle in French (château de sable, referring to a black castle but also meaning “sandcastle” in common parlance) signals the transitory nature of life. The four flags represent Mr. Bertrand’s French, Irish, Huron and Algonquin family heritage.

Crest

The wolf alludes to Mr. Bertrand’s role as “leader of the pack” in his family and work. The sail illustrates his love of sailing, travelling and freedom. The grenade is the emblem of the Fusiliers Mont-Royal, the regiment where he rose through the ranks and where he founded his family with his wife, Johanne Senneville, C.D.

Motto

This Latin phrase means “Sow happy memories every day.”

Flag

The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.

The colour change is a temporary distinction to indicate he will inherit the full arms upon his father’s death.

The parrot, an animal known for its ability to learn and to use language, symbolizes her profession as a speech-language pathologist.
