Symbolism
Arms
The red saltire on the white field is inspired by the arms of Lennox families in the United Kingdom. The blue chief and its wavy line, a reference to water, alludes to the Scots meaning of Lennox, “field of the smooth stream”. The sea serpent, often used on maps to denote unexplored waters, symbolizes exploration. The bull’s head refers to Mr. Lennox’s ancestor, John Bull, who changed his name to William Lennox c. 1877.
Crest
The unicorn, as an imaginary creature, symbolizes Mr. Lennox’s artistic imagination. The United Empire Loyalist coronet symbolizes Mr. Lennox’s descent from the Loyalist Conrad Sills, who served in Butler’s Rangers (1777-1780). The seax alludes to the locale of the Bull family in the county of Middlesex, England, in whose arms seaxes appear.
Motto
This Latin phrase, meaning “Not all those who wander are lost”, is a translated line from the poem “All that is gold does not glitter”, written by J. R. R. Tolkien in The Fellowship of the Ring.
