Symbolism

Arms

The sun and the Chi-Rho are symbols of Christ, with the sun also referring to British Columbia and the Chi-Rho to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver, as they are found in their respective coats of arms. The waves refer to the Pacific Ocean, and their number alludes to the seven sacraments.

Crest

The eagle is the symbol of St. John the Evangelist, indicating that the theology of the incarnation expressed in St. John’s Gospel is central to the college’s ethos. Eagles are also a local species. The rocky base represents the nearby Coastal Mountains.

Supporters

The black-tailed deer are found near the college’s Glover Road campus, and western red cedar trees are found at the Walnut Grove campus. Both are natural features of the Fraser Valley region. The daffodils and tulips have been cultivated by Fraser Valley farmers over the last century.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “Sift everything, hold on to what is good”, is based on 1 Thessalonians 5:21.

Flag

The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.
