Symbolism
Arms
Blue and red symbolize respectively the Royal Canadian Air Force and the scarlet beret of the Military Police Branch, in which Mr. Thobo-Carlsen has served. Half lion, half eagle, the griffin refers to his role as a military leader and his love of aviation. The sword is emblematic of the authority vested in him as a commissioned officer of the Canadian Armed Forces. The shield shapes symbolize the protective role he played as a military police officer. Their number evokes his wife and their two daughters.
Crest
The lynx, noted for its eyesight and hearing, is an efficient hunter. Shown in red to emphasize Mr. Thobo-Carlsen’s pride in his native country, Canada, it also bears a sun reminiscent of the one in the arms of his home province of British Columbia. The compass rose recalls his many postings and deployments throughout his military career as well as his role as commanding officer of the Canadian Forces National Counter-Intelligence Unit, which includes a compass rose in its badge.
Motto
This Latin phrase means “To protect freedom.”
Badge
The griffin and colours are key elements from the arms. The escutcheon represents Mr. Thobo-Carlsen’s interest in heraldry, while the belt for him symbolizes togetherness and family, honouring his mother’s Munro and Kennedy ancestors from Scotland.
