Symbolism
Arms
The gold sun on a blue chief evokes the arms of Scarborough, Ontario, Mr. Bedford’s place of residence. The two white areas beside the blue triangle symbolize the Scarborough bluffs. They also represent the new world of Toronto and Scarborough and the old world of England and Ireland, countries of origins for his and his wife’s ancestors. The wavy bands, inspired by the flag of Bedfordshire, England, symbolize Lake Ontario below the Scarborough bluffs. The crosses are for his two children, and also represent the family’s Christian faith. The sun symbolizes knowledge and enlightenment imparted through the arts and education, the areas of employment of Mr. Bedford and his wife and children.
Crest
The eagle is inspired by the arms of the Borough of Bedford, England and alludes to Eagle Lake, Ontario, the location of the family cottage. As well, it is the symbol of St. John the Evangelist and this represents St. John’s Anglican Church at Eagle Lake where the family worship. The cross alludes to the Anglican Church of Canada. The maple leaves represent Mr. Bedford’s pride as a Canadian citizen, and the spearheads allude to his wife’s maiden name of Hunt.
Motto
This phrase is used by Mr. Bedford to encourage his children to strive for quality.
