Symbolism

Arms

The cross is indicative of Mr. Hyde’s faith and the importance it plays in his life. The fur of the cross relates to the hide in the crest. The mural coronets are symbolic of Mr. Hyde’s long service in municipal governments.

Crest

The hide is a canting reference to Mr. Hyde’s surname. The upper portion of the sea-horse is representative of Mr. Hyde’s membership in the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple (an association of barristers in the United Kingdom) of which the Pegasus is the emblem; the lower half is both a reference to his passion for sea-going pursuits and to his mother’s maiden name of Fisher.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “Great difficulty, greater glory,” is a paraphrase of the saying “The greater the difficulty, the greater the glory” by Marcus Tullius Cicero (Cic. Off. 1.64).

Badge

The horse refers to Mr. Hyde’s birth in the Chinese year of the horse. The Roman fasces allude to Mr. Hyde’s training as a lawyer. They were also a symbol of civil authority in ancient Rome, and thus symbolizes Mr. Hyde’s work in municipal government.
