Symbolism
Arms
Red and blue are favourite colours of Mr. Hildreth’s. They also allude to his British and American ancestry. The rose indicates his ancestry in Yorkshire, England, and the way it shelters rosebuds is an allusion to his career in children’s services. The three pheons are taken from arms previously borne by other Hildreths, the old Massachusetts family from which Mr. Hildreth comes.
Crest
The armoured arm refers to the protective nature of Mr. Hildreth’s work, and the rose refers to the charge in the arms and in the crest of other Hildreth arms.
Motto
MEMENTO ET PARA TE is a Latin phrase that means “Remember and prepare yourself.” It refers to Mr. Hildreth’s interest in studying history, and his optimism toward the future.
