Symbolism

Arms

The ship is a traditional symbol of St. Jude, representative of his travels, and has been used by the parish in various forms, including with a cross set on the sail. Red is often used with the arms of martyr saints, and here it also refers to the red brick of the church building. The crenellated line alludes to the church’s tower. The oak leaves create a canting reference to Oakville. The disc with wavy lines, a heraldic charge called a “fountain,” refers to the sacrament of baptism and to the church’s location close to Lake Ontario.

Motto

This phrase is taken from the collect for the feast of Saints Simon and Jude in the Book of Common Prayer.

Flag

The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.

Badge

The sail refers to the ship attribute of St. Jude. The red cross with green leaves between the limbs alludes to the badge of the Anglican Church of Canada, which is a red cross between four green maple leaves on a white disc.
