Symbolism
Arms
The colour green represents Mr. Howard’s engineering work in the field of green technology. The green sections allude to the letter H, referring to his surname and to the element hydrogen, and thus to Mr. Howard’s work with hydrogen fuel cells. The suns symbolize the energy produced by fuel cells. Their number pays tribute to Ballard Power Systems’ three co-founders, among whom Mr. Howard was the expert engineer. The wavy stripes allude to water, of which hydrogen is a component, and to Mr. Howard’s love of boating and the sea.
Crest
To Mr. Howard, the lion symbolizes strength and purpose. The cross-crosslet refers to his Christian faith and to his involvement in his parish church. It is also a symbol often found in the arms of people with the surname Howard. The box holding the emerging sun represents a fuel cell and the energy it creates through an innovative technology developed by Mr. Howard and his colleagues.
