Symbolism
Arms
The shield, notably the bend and the garbs, is based on English arms traditionally associated with the name Fitton, Mrs. Greenwood’s family name, but with a change of colour as a reference to her married name. The maunches represent her expertise and interest in fashion, which she studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts.
Crest
The crest is based on a traditional Fitton crest featuring a wyvern. The musical note symbolizes Mrs. Greenwood’s skill as a pianist and her lifelong interest in music. The white rose of York honours her father, Wing Commander Alec Knowles-Fitton, M.B.E., at one time County Councillor for West Yorkshire, and her mother Mabel (Bentley) Fitton.
Motto
VAE DUPLICI CORDI is a Latin phrase meaning “Woe to the deceitful heart”, which has been used by Mrs. Greenwood’s family for many years.
Flag
The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.
