The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The pillar and the fess wavy are charges found in other Edward Arms. They possibly refer to the Motto. The red border indicates that the recipient is descended from a fourth branch of the family.

The tortoise is a traditional crest of Edward families.
Motto
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. This Latin phrase, meaning “Neither wave nor wind [move him]” may refer to the pillar of the Arms, firmly standing on the water represented by the fess wavy.
