Symbolism

Arms

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The cross-crosslet in an X-shape is known as the cross of St. Julian the Hospitaller, the patron saint of hotel-keepers and of travellers seeking lodging. The flame and the discs resembling heraldic fountains refer to the importance of food and drink in the hospitality industry, with the flame representing cooking and the fountains, drinks. The red and gold colours of the fountains allude to wine and to beer and spirits respectively. The maple leaf refers to Canada.

Motto

This Latin phrase means “We work while others play.” It alludes to the hard work of those in the hotel industry in ensuring the comfort of guests.
