The rose represents England, the country of origin of the Goby family. The wings evoke the badge of the Royal Flying Corps in which Mr. Goby’s paternal grandfather, Arthur Goby, served during the First World War. The tower is a canting reference to the maiden name of Mr. Goby’s paternal grandmother, Eva Mary Castle. The maple seeds represent Canada. The fish are a canting reference to Mr. Goby’s surname, goby being a type of fish.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “Stand on giants’ shoulders,” recognizes all those who have come before and motivates those of the present to become a giant for those who follow.

Badge

The upper left gold section represents the triangular shape of the municipality of Avonlea, Saskatchewan, the present place of residence of the Goby family. The eagle alludes not only to Arthur Goby’s wartime role but also to Mr. Goby’s current interest in recreational flying.
