The tobacco leaf refers to the Chapel Royal Tobacco Beds, which were first established at Waterdown, Ontario. This tobacco is prepared for ceremonial uses by the Chapel Royal at Massey College to be presented by Crown representatives in Canada to Indigenous elders, teachers, leaders and community members. Tobacco is part of the sacred medicine intrinsic to Indigenous life and the gifting of it by the Sovereign, or the Sovereign’s representative, is an important protocol of Treaty Relationships across Turtle Island (North America). The Royal Crown denotes the royal designation of the chapel at Massey College.
