Symbolism
Arms
Blue alludes to the sky and, consequently, Mr. Markovic’s interest in aviation as a licensed pilot. Red and white represent Canada, while the combination of the three colours recall those of Serbia, Mr. Markovic’s ancestral home. The cross honours his Orthodox Christian faith. The firesteels are taken from the arms of Serbia, while also evoking his father’s work as a blacksmith. The oak leaves are another symbol of Serbia, while their shape in a wreath refers to Mr. Markovic’s academic achievements.
Crest
The eagle and the plums are symbols commonly associated with Serbia. The plums also symbolize wealth and prosperity, and thus Mr. Markovic’s profession as a mortgage broker. Moreover, as allusions to the expression “the fruits of one’s labours,” they further evoke Mr. Markovic’s role as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he instructs cadets.
Motto
This Serbian phrase means “Strength in solitude.”
Flag
The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.
Badge
The blue disc represents a propeller hub, while the arrangement of the oak leaves recalls the propeller of a plane. The other elements repeat the symbolism of the Arms.
