The trillium represents Mr. Austin’s province of residence, Ontario. The division line is a chevron, a heraldic shape commonly found in arms belonging to people with the surname Austin.

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The sword likely alludes to Mr. Austin’s military service as a major in the Canadian Army.
