Badge

The pug repeats the symbolism of the Crest, while the chicken leg and cake stand are additional reminders of Dr. Whibbs’ profession.

Arms

The cockentrice, a hybrid half-pig and half-rooster dish created by Tudor-era cooks, alludes to Dr. Whibbs’ specialization in food history. As ermine was a fur traditionally associated with high social status and luxury, the use of this heraldic pattern represents Dr. Whibbs’ study of, and work experience in, haute cuisine.

Crest

The pug embodies Dr. Whibbs’ love for the breed, while also reflecting the Motto since these dogs in particular are known to love food. The chef’s knife and steel further symbolize his profession as a food historian.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “Eat your bread with enjoyment,” is taken from the Bible (Eccl. 9:7).
