Symbolism

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The white field and the red quarter are based on the arms of the Royal Society in the United Kingdom, on which the Canadian entity was based. The book with its pendent seals appears on the corporate seal of the Society and refers to its mandate to promote learning and research, as Canada’s national academy. The coronet alludes to its royal designation, while the maple leaves symbolize Canada. Red and white are the national colours.
Crest
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The maple leaf represents Canada, while laurel branches are frequently used to embody excellence and achievement.
Motto
This Latin phrase means “We strive towards the same thing, although having different pursuits.” It refers to the many fields of study of the Society’s members.
