Black three-masted ships on a white background are commonly found in the arms of persons bearing the name Meares. The design is likely a canting one, assuming that Meares is perhaps linked to the Old English word mere, meaning “sea.”

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The mermaid is possibly a canting reference to the name Meares.

Motto

This Latin phrase meaning “I commit all things to Providence” is common to Irish Meares families.
