Symbolism

Badge

White and blue are common in the badges of military research centres across Canada. For the Unit, blue represents the scientific community, green embodies growth and innovation, while gold reflects the idea of striving for excellence and achievement. The pattern of stairs represents the idea of a ladder of knowledge, in which research continuously moves toward advancing and developing innovative technology. The way that the bands fit together also highlights the collaboration that is required from the different research centres located throughout Canada. Finally, the heraldic beacon represents knowledge and emphasizes the Unit’s role as a guiding light, helping to enable the expansion and application of scientific knowledge in Canada.

Motto

This Latin expression, meaning “Defence through science,” has long been used as the motto of the Military Support Unit’s research centres.
