Symbolism
Arms
Gold and blue are found in the emblems of Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, Ryerson Polytechnical University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and Queen’s University at Kingston, the three institutions where Mr. Kosiner studied. The orca is a nod to his father, who has always been fascinated by this sea dweller. As a skilled and creative hunter with a sophisticated language and long-range call abilities, the orca symbolizes strength, innovation, daring and communication. It thus alludes to Mr. Kosiner’s career as an innovative entrepreneur in broadcasting. The curved lines represent radio waves and his work in radio broadcasting. The sling refers to David’s fight against Goliath, which expresses how Mr. Kosiner often feels as he undertakes his ventures.
Crest
The oak references the emblem of the former Village of Forest Hill and, depicted on a hill, it echoes the name of this Toronto neighbourhood where Mr. Kosiner grew up and to which he is strongly attached. The skates represent the sports equipment distributed to less fortunate children through the nation-wide “Skate to Great” drive cofounded and chaired by Mr. Kosiner. Suspended on either side of the tree, they convey the image of a balance and his dream of justice for all.
Motto
This Latin phrase meaning “Not for ourselves alone” is the motto of Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, where Mr. Kosiner went to high school. This motto has shaped the person he has become.
Flag
The symbolism of this emblem is found in other element(s) of this record.
Badge
The ancient crown is taken from the arms of Queen’s University, where Mr. Kosiner did his master’s degree. The disc represents a round shield to represent his warrior spirit. The concentric circles allude to radio waves and his career in broadcasting.
