Crest

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The Pacific dogwood is the floral emblem of British Columbia, Mr. Young’s home province. The western red cedar is the official tree of British Columbia.

Motto

This phrase is likely inspired by the last lines of Tennyson’s poem “Ulysses”: “… strong in will / To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” (lines 69-70).
