Symbolism
Arms
The black chevron and arrowheads on a white background are commonly used by persons bearing the surname Smart in Scotland. The rose is common to arms of Scottish families named Napier, Lennox and Montrose, from whom Mr. Smart is descended. The crescent and border are marks of differencing.
Crest
A hand holding a dart has been used as a crest by other Scottish armigers named Smart. The sleeve is a distinguishing mark for this branch of the family.
Motto
This Scots expression means “Aim well” and is a motto used by persons bearing the surname Smart. It relates to the arrow in the Crest.
