Symbolism
Arms
Green, blue and gold represent Mr. Royal’s love of nature, particularly forests, bodies of water and the sun. The fox tail symbolizes Mr. Royal’s resourcefulness and entrepreneurial spirit. The three blue sections represent the three canals that flow through the region around Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, where he was born and still lives, and where his ancestors settled. The wavy line evokes the bollards (mooring posts) that line the docks of those canals.
Crest
The mallard and cattails again allude to Mr. Royal’s love of nature. They evoke one of his favourite pastimes—hunting—as the mallard is one of the migratory birds he hunts, while the cattails symbolize the marshes that serve as their habitat. Additionally, the latter form a crown, a nod to the surname Royal.
Motto
This French phrase meaning “Without fear or regret” reflects Mr. Royal’s bold spirit and his ability to never regret his choices.
