Symbolism
Arms
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The ermine background is found in the original coat of arms of the University of Ottawa and could refer to Dr. Lussier’s long association with this institution culminating in his 18 years as dean of the Faculty of Medicine. The shells are an attribute of St. James (Jacques in French), and thus possibly allude to one of his names.
Crest
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The unicorn was reputed to have healing powers, so its use here might allude to Dr. Lussier’s membership in the medical profession. The garland of roses (rosarium in Latin) likely refers to a rosary and thus to Dr. Lussier’s Catholic faith.
Motto
This French phrase means “I hold that God does everything for the best.”
