Symbolism

Arms

Blue and white are the colours of the Scottish flag, indicating that many of Ms. Thomson’s ancestors were Scottish. The chevron represents the hill of Dunadd Hillfort, County Argyle, Scotland, where her ancestors’ farm was located. The rising sun symbolizes artistic vision and the potential of art to be uplifting, embodying sentiments shared by Ms. Thomson and her children in their practice of contemporary dance, and by her spouse James Kacki in his work in architecture. The cat symbolizes Julian of Norwich, a 14th century mystic often portrayed with a cat at her feet and with whom Ms. Thomson feels a special connection because of Lady Julian’s progressive ideas and philosophy. A quintessential English emblem, the rose honours the origins of Ms. Thomson’s spouse and of one of her grandfathers.

Crest

The doe alludes to Ms. Thomson’s home, where deer are seen every day, and to her family’s love of animals. The position of the doe conveys the image of a dancer leaping. The snowflake references the insignia of the Order of Canada, in which Ms. Thomson was invested in recognition for her contributions as a contemporary dancer, artistic director and teacher. The snowflake also represents Winnipeg, where Ms. Thomson lives, which is one of the coldest major cities in the world.
