Symbolism

Arms

The maple leaves represent Dr. Calvert’s Canadian nationality. The Maltese cross alludes to his position as a Knight in the Order of St. John.

Crest

The calf is a pun on Dr. Calvert’s surname, which originates from an Old English word for “calf herdsman.” The fleam symbolizes his career as a surgeon.

Motto

This Latin phrase means “To strive, to seek, to find,” which is taken from the poem “Ulysses” by Alfred Tennyson.

Badge

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The unicorn’s horn, reputed to have healing properties, likely alludes to Dr. Calvert’s profession as a medical doctor.
