Symbolism
Arms
Red and gold are colours associated with China, the country of Dr. Fong’s ancestors. The rose, the national flower of the United States, signifies his birthplace and the country in which several generations of his family came to pursue higher education and ultimately established their home. Red and white are the colours of Canada, where he now lives and works. The radiating pattern in the background represents Dr. Fong’s broad interests and knowledge in many different fields, while the vertical stripe represents a well, a symbol of his ability to plumb the depths of a particular subject.
Crest
The Chinese dragon honours Dr. Fong’s ancestry. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The pearl gives it wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual power, thus indicating the importance of education for Dr. Fong’s family. In Chinese mythology, the pearl is sometimes interpreted as an egg, so the dragon protecting it is a metaphor for the care and respect for life. This represents Dr. Fong’s work in health sciences and his science-based advocacy in support of healthy living.
