Symbolism
Arms
The blue field represents the waters crossed in military service for both World War II and the Korean War. It also refers to Mr. Brooks’ service in the Marine Pilotage section of Transport Canada. The anchor highlights that Mr. Brooks, a retired Lieutenant Commander, was a member of the Navy and continues to be involved in projects concerning water in his civilian activities. The figure formed of eight anchors refers to the fact that Mr. Brooks traces his Loyalist roots across eight generations and the four larger anchors indicate that he has four children. This figure also mimics a compass, and reinforces the notion of piloting and direction involved in marine traffic, an aspect of Mr. Brooks’ professional experience.
Crest
The wreath of Ontario’s official flower, the trillium, honours Mr. Brooks’ birthplace. The hawk, a bird of strength with acute sight, symbolizes his work with birds. The books stand for Mr. Brooks’ role as a teacher.
Motto
CAN DO refers to an important aspect of Mr. Brooks’ personal philosophy.
