Symbolism
Arms
The blue field symbolises the Lower Town of Quebec, characterized by the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Victoires and the wharves once bustling with maritime activity. It also represents the intense devotion of Father Godbout to the Virgin Mary. The crenelated chief represents the Upper Town of Quebec, the place of his education and activities. Red symbolizes faith, courage and love. The anchor refers to his ancestor Nicolas Godbout, a marine pilot, and to his maternal ancestor Joseph Bélanger, a naval captain. The three shells symbolize his community work, his involvement in teaching and artistic pursuits, and his commitment to his religious ministry.
Motto
GAUDIUM SENTIRE means “To feel joy.”
